Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, and a spokesperson for Facebook said the message was not true. But this message was not conveyed to US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, who shared the hoax.

Snopes wrote for the first time about misrepresentations in 2012, when similar messages were posted on Facebook. As NBC News reports, it could have roots in a rumor dating back to 2007. Although there have been more recent jokes, this one is remarkable given its history. This would be a good time for Facebook's fact checkers to review Instagram posts.
