Longtime draft analyst Matt Miller is convinced the San Francisco 49ers traded at No.3 in Alabama quarterback Mac Jones’ pick, and it doesn’t look like it very happy. He grew up as a Niners fan, and the idea that his favorite NFL team might pick Jones over Ohio State’s Justin Fields bothers him on two fronts – as a fan and an analyst.
“As a lifelong Niners fan, that’s such a punch to the stomach,” Miller said on the And the Patrick Show. “I try to trust (general manager) John Lynch and (head coach) Kyle Shanahan, but I remember when they said they didn’t need a quarterback and that they passed over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson only to take CJ Beathard in the third round.
“I’m still a little shy about trusting this front office. It sounds like something they would do. They would think about it again, just like trading for Solomon Thomas or drafting Reuben Foster in the first round. like this front office is sometimes a little too cute. “
The other question surrounding the trade – assuming Jones is the target – involves the jump to # 3. Was it necessary?
“They didn’t have to go three, Dan,” Miller explained. “I don’t think they did. Now maybe seven. Maybe six, which we’ve already seen that pick being traded. But I don’t think you have to go from 12 to three to get Mac Jones.
“I don’t think the Atlanta Falcons [were going to select him]. … I feel like the Falcons would be all-in on Justin Fields, who’s a local kid, Trey Lance, who has great athleticism, throws a nice deep ball – if they even become a quarterback.
“The Bengals don’t draft a quarterback at five. The Eagles won’t draft at six. The Niners had other options. My hope and my prayer, as someone who is still a bit of a 49ers fan, is that [this] is a gesture for Justin Fields. And I would say that even as an impartial reviewer. “
Shanahan and Lynch were both in attendance for Jones’ Professional Day at Tuscaloosa on Tuesday. 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters was in attendance at Fields’ training in Columbus, which took place the same day. Shanahan and Lynch plan to hold separate practice for Fields later so the duo can watch it in person.

Everyone is discussing Friday’s massive trade between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins, dropping the first from the 12th pick to No.3 while abandoning future early players. This puts the team in a prime position to select one of the top quarterback prospects in next month’s draft. It won’t be Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, who is expected to be selected No.1 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. BYU’s Zach Wilson might head to the New York Jets at No.2. Assuming that’s the way things go, NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah had some thoughts on what GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan could do at No. 3. “That’s what we expect, and it’s

Who will it be? Justin Fields from Ohio State or Trey Lance from North Dakota State? Or could the San Francisco 49ers go in another direction? Immediately after the exchange of No.12 to No.3, NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms expressed his opinion. He thinks Alabama’s Mac Jones is the best person based on what he knows about his close friend, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. https://twitter.com/CSimmsQB/status/1375504136905580545 Simms reiterated those thoughts on Monday when speaking to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. Florio asked his PFT Live co-host who he thought Shanahan was leaning towards with a draft still full.
Jeremiah: Majority of NFL think 49ers trading was for Mac Jones

It looks like the majority of the NFL think the San Francisco 49ers going from No.12 to No.3 overall last week were aiming to get the right to draft Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, not Justin Ohio State Fields or Trey Lance from North Dakota State. Of course, that might be exactly what the 49ers want the league to believe. There are so many smokescreens in the project that it’s hard to predict what might happen. This is part of the appeal. Still, NFL Media Draft Analyst Daniel Jeremiah has revealed what a lot of people are hearing in the league: Head coach Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco covet Jones, who most of the time feels he could be. the fifth-best quarterback in this year’s draft class. “Well, I think the majority of people in the league
