There is one factor that can help determine whether a Tennessee football head coach will be successful: whether or not Paul Finebaum opposes the hiring. If the story is any indication, the opposite take of hers is more accurate.
Much news was made when the UCF Knights hired Gus Malzahn to replace Josh Heupel, who is now the Head Coach of Flights. Many analysts across the country say UCF got the best result from this deal.
One of these analysts is Southern Mouth itself. According to Garrett Stephen of 247Sports, Finebaum, who is ironically a graduate of UT, claims UCF has improved after losing Heupel. Here is a bit of what the SEC expert said.

Well, given Finebaum’s record as a staunch supporter of Jeremy Pruitt when Tennessee football hired him, Vol fans should be relieved that they weren’t high on the Heupel hire. Let’s just go back and look at these takes.
On the day of Pruitt’s introduction in 2017, Finebaum praised Phillip Fulmer on Twitter for bringing the university together after Greg Schiano’s research and praising the first impression Pruitt made. The following April he praised the rental Pruitt in a radio interview with WJOX 94.5 station from Birmingham, Ala.. Here is a bit of what he said then.

Considering the fact that Pruitt was fired due to an NCAA investigation into improper benefits, touting the idea that he gives a straight answer to things hasn’t aged very well. However, it gets even worse.
A day after former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray, now a CBS Sports Network analyst, asked ESPN Radio The Game in Nashville, Tennessee during SEC Media Days whether or not Pruitt had the personality. from a head coach, Finebaum had a strong response. . He accused Murray of not knowing what he was talking about and called Pruitt a “phenomenal leader”.

To be fair, Finebaum admitted to 247Sports’ Kipp Adams last month that he was wrong about Pruitt. In this interview, he said he thought Pruitt was a good employee at first, but was more “disappointed” whenever the two met. Here is a bit of what he said in this interview.
“I’ll tell you, at first I thought it would be good. Then, the few times I was with him up there, I left each time more disappointed. He’s got a block somewhere in his system that he just can’t tell apart. He can’t take advice, number one. I know people tried to help him. Number two, he just had a propensity to be a hothead. We have seen evidence of this all the time. I’m glad you brought it up. Aaron was absolutely right in his assessment of the situation.
While all of this is probably true, Finebaum’s years of experience in Alabama suggest he didn’t fully know Pruitt until Tennessee football hired him. As a result, it is safe to say that he just had a bad catch.
That’s all great news for Rocky Top now. As a guy from Alabama, Finebaum is also familiar with Malzahn, which means preferring the new UCF coach to his old one can have the same effect as his portrayal of Pruitt.
Of course, that’s not really a correlation, as we only have what he said about Pruitt. However, Finebaum craned his neck to defend the guy, and it didn’t work out well. As a result, this time, what he says against Heupel could be a sign of positivity for Tennessee football. Hey, you’ve got to find some encouragement somewhere.
