CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Thursday, where he spoke about his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, who died at the age of 95 in July 2019. Cooper opened up about his mother’s eccentricities, and told for the first time on television, a crazy idea that she had had at the age of 85. .

Cooper said she called him, saying she really needed to talk to him about something. He went through different scenarios of what it might be on his way home, but wasn’t even close to preparing for what the purpose of the visit turned out to be. When Cooper arrived, his mother informed him that she had been to the gynecologist the week before, which “wasn’t so unusual for her to start a sentence like that”, but that was just the beginning. . She informed Cooper that the gynecologist had told her that she could still have a child. At first, Cooper thought his mother wanted to try and get pregnant again, but she didn’t.

Before getting into what his mother had in mind, he said: “You know sometimes people wonder how during interviews I stay, like, stone face and listen to people say crazy things. . I grew up with Gloria Vanderbilt.

Cooper began trying to talk his mother out of it when she revealed the reason she wanted to talk to him.

Cooper explained, “She said, ‘Well, you know, you can get an egg anywhere these days.’ I was like, ‘Uh huh.’ She said, “Well, what I was thinking is you get an egg and, you know, fertilize it with your sperm, and I’ll bear your baby.”

Cooper, who now co-parent son Wyatt with ex Benjamin Maisani, was visibly blown away by his mother’s offer.

“I was just stunned,” Cooper said, “and I finally told him, I thought,“ You know, mom, I love you, but even for you, it’s just crazy. It’s just crazy. I was like, ‘It’s just weirdly Oedipal on a whole new level. This kid would be on the front page of New York Post for the rest of his life.

But his mother, whose advice Cooper lovingly described as sometimes ridiculous recently, was still pushing the subject two years later.

“Fast forward two years later I get a mail my mom sent me because that’s how we communicated,” Cooper said, “and it’s a newspaper clipping, and it’s a photo, the title is “Grandmother bear child for son.

Cooper said in the photo that the son and his partner were watching the birth of their child. He said his mother had circled him, with the note “See! “
