The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t walked much lately, but the addition of Andre Drummond has served as a reminder that the team remains one of the NBA’s top contenders. It didn’t take long for another bad break.
Three quarters of his Lakers debut on Wednesday, Drummond came out with a right toe injury. Lakers reporter Mike Trudell later reported that Drummond would miss the remainder of the game with a contusion to his right big toe, with the x-rays coming back negative.
Drummond could be seen limping significantly as he made his way to the Lakers locker room.
Drummond finished the game with four points on 2 of 6 shots with one rebound, two assists, three turnovers and four personal fouls in 14 minutes. The Lakers ended up losing 112-97.
Lakers coach Frank Vogel told reporters after the match that Drummond felt enough discomfort in his toe at half time that he almost didn’t play in the third quarter. Drummond would have his toe reassessed on Thursday.
Drummond, 27, signed with the Lakers on Sunday immediately after reaching a buyout deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Drummond was among the biggest names in the NBA buyout market and was quickly named the Lakers ‘new starting center due to erratic production from the Lakers’ big-man duo Montrezl Harrell and Marc Gasol.
If Drummond has to miss time beyond the rest of Wednesday’s game, it’s more difficult news for a Lakers team that has already been missing LeBron James and Anthony Davis for quite a while. The Lakers are 2-5 since James sprained his ankle on March 20.
