After playing for four years at Texas Tech under coach Bob Knight, Emmett was selected in the second round of the NBA selection in 2004 with the 35th overall pick.

Emmett had brief stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and New Jersey Nets, and recently played professionally in the BIG3 three-on-three league.

Early Monday morning, Emmett was approached by two men while he was sitting in his car outside his home in Dallas, police said.

The men made a handgun, the police said. An altercation followed and Emmett was shot dead while he was fleeing, they said.

A passerby found Emmett and called 911. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Andre Emmett has been inducted into the Ring of Honor and the Texas Tech Hall of Fame.

Emmett had "emerged as the leading candidate for the most valuable player title and had one of the most impressive playoff series in the history of BIG3," according to a BIG3 profile.

"The BIG3 is shocked by the sudden and tragic death of André Emmett André has been a member of the BIG3 family for two seasons and has never had a smiles smile, his kindness towards others and his casual attitude have made it a joy to be around, "said the BIG3 in a statement.

"Off the field, Dre was passionate about helping young people through her Dreams Really Exist Foundation. We are simply upset by this devastating loss. Our thoughts go out to Andre's family and friends in this difficult time. "
