Lions running back Andre Swift still doesn’t train with an illness, while wide receiver Kenny Golladay improves.

Acting Lions head coach Darrell Bevell said today that Swift is staying out of training with an illness which the Lions say is not COVID-19 and is also unrelated to the concussion he suffered two weeks ago. Bevell said if Swift plays at all on Sunday against the Bears, it would be a small package of games because he hasn’t had any practice work.

“He missed a lot of time at training camp so we’re building him a little bit more and a little more,” he said. “We just have to see as far as the game goes, some very specific stuff so that he can come out and play fast.”

Bevell also said wide receiver Kenny Golladay is improving every day and Bevell is hopeful Golladay can leave.

“I love Kenny,” Bevell said. “He’s a super competitive guy. He wants to be there for his teammates, he wants to play ball for himself, and he’s a game-changer for us when he’s there.

Bevell, who was an offensive coordinator until he was promoted after Matt Patricia’s sacking, said he viewed the rest of the season as his five-game audition to prove he could be a head coach. He would love to have Swift and Golladay, perhaps his two best playmakers, to help him audition.
