ALLEN PARK – The good news is the Detroit Lions didn’t suffer a serious injury in training camp. The bad news is the Detroit Lions suffered a slew of minor injuries in training camp, enough to reduce Thursday’s practice to a tour.
Head coach Dan Campbell said that was kind of the plan from the start, having put on paddles the past two days.
“Guys, I think they’ve done a hell of a job so far,” said Campbell. “The way they trained is what I had hoped for. And, you know, I really felt like these guys attacked him, they put in the work. We had an exceptional day yesterday. Now there have been some issues that we need to fundamentally clean up, but I’m going to tell you what, as far as going out and trying to get things done, put in the work, compete, give all you got, try to win performance, figuring out what we’re trying to do what we wanted to do, that was a pretty aggressive practice. And I think hitting, I think tackling has to be part of it. This is the essence of defense. Breaking a tackle, chasing a hold, all of those things. So I think we’ve done part of that.
“Now I knew it was going to be a tough week for them. I told them at the start of the week, I said, ‘Look, we’re coming off the day off, it’s kind of like an acclimatization day, which was Monday. (Then) we’re going to put you in the red for two days in blocks, ”which we did. And then I told them we would go back on Thursday, which is today. But I said, ‘You have to get down to work.’ And they did. That’s what I wanted, so we’re going to have some sort of extended tour today. I favor quality over quantity. I didn’t want to go out and keep doing it – you can only line them up in red for so long before something explodes, and you won’t get the job you want.
Campbell also provided updates on many injuries that have arisen this week.
(Apparently, the Detroit Lions head coach is authorized to provide injury updates. Who knew? Signed, era veteran Matt Patricia.)
– The camp’s most serious injury was suffered by offensive lineman Tyrell Crosby, who suffers from a grade 1 hamstring pull. He could be out for a few days. “It’s going to be down a bit,” Campbell said. “We think it could be (about a week). We’ll see where he is today, tomorrow, but yes he did, he pulled out his hammer.
– Running back D’Andre Swift trained despite some groin strain. His workload has been reduced in recent days as the Lions try to prepare him for a season where he is expected to be RB1. “He’s good,” Cambell said. “He’s tied pretty tight. It heats up. And so, you know, we’re trying to get it back. We’re just trying to make sure we’re smart about the way we give him his job, you know? ”
– Edge Julian Okara suffered a rib contusion in training on Wednesday. He left training early with a trainer before returning with an ice pack strapped to his side. The injury is minor and he is expected to return soon. “He should be fine,” Campbell said. “I expect him to be back not today, but tomorrow.”
– Cornerback Jerry Jacobs has a bruised thigh after being stepped on by another player on Wednesday.
– Defensive lineman Michael Brockers, acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams, is resting these days. He hasn’t adjusted all week as the Lions try to handle the veteran’s load. “We’re just trying to be smart with Brock, man,” Campbell said. “Brock is a 10 year old vet, and he’s been doing it for a long time now, and we kind of know what he can do, so we’re just trying to be smart. He will get his representatives – they will come – but we kind of know what he is.
– There was also good news regarding injuries, with offensive lineman Evan Brown being dropped from the non-football injury list for Thursday’s visit. This means that three of the 14 offensive linemen who will be on the training ground are called Evan – the surnames Brown, Boehm and Heim.
“We got all of the Evans back,” said Campbell. “So we’re just going to pull a name out of a hat and say, ‘Hey, Evan, go ahead,’ and see who’s running over there to get reps, see what happens.”
