Last Saturday in the defeat of the Capitals against the Canes in the third match, Alex Ovechkin and Andrei Svechnikov had a brutal fight. Svechnikov, aged 19, went to the hospital and recently returned to practice with a full face mask.
Now good enough to talk to reporters, Svechnkikov shared his own account of the fight, which differs from that of Ovechkin.
"He first asked me to fight," Svechnikov said. "I am not a superhero, ask for the fight first."
Ovechkin had previously stated that it was Svechnikov who had asked to fight. Ovechkin responded to the request with "let's go" and the two men punched each other.

Ovechkin also apologized to Svechnikov and said he "hoped everything would be fine for him."
Svechnikov said that Ovechkin had called to monitor him.
"He called me right after the match and I just talked to him a bit, you know."

At the post-match press conference of the third match, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour, who had attended the fight but had not spoken to Svechnikov, thought that Was Ovechkin who had been the instigator.
"A guy's gloves are first, and Ovi is not our guy," he said. "I just heard Ovi talk about it [in his post-game interview]. He said our guy had challenged him, so if that's the case, it's a little different. "
Dissenting opinions were presented at Coach's Corner last Saturday. Don Cherry pointed out that Svechnikov's repeated physical attacks and Ovechkin's harassment as a triggering factor did not necessarily constitute a prolonged and accepted verbal agreement.
"Listen: when you catch one guy and go after another guy, you better get ready," said Cherry. "If you're a kid and want to go – he gave Ovechkin a hard time, Ovechkin would not go there."
Ron MacLean said that Ovechkin "should not have taken a child", and that it is he who "invited [Svechnikov] go."
Svechnikov hopes to return for the sixth match that will take place Monday in Carolina.
