The Twins have reached a deal with shortstop Andrelton Simmons on a one-year contract worth $ 10.5 million, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Tuesday night. The club have not confirmed the move.

Simmons will take over the full-time shortstop position from the Twins, while incumbent Jorge Polanco will transition to a utility role. Simmons was also reportedly the Phillies’ main target after agreeing to a deal with wide receiver JT Realmuto earlier Tuesday.

Simmons, 31, ranks among the best defensive shortstops in recent history. He owns four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and also won the Platinum Glove Award (bestowed on the best overall defenseman in each league) with the Braves in 2013. The CuraƧao native was the Braves’ second round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. and spent his first four seasons in the Major League in Atlanta before being traded to the Angels after Season 15. Simmons won his third and fourth career gold gloves with Los Angeles, and he finished eighth in the MVP vote American League Award in 2017.

Simmons has taken a step back since then, cutting .271 / .318 / .362 since the start of the 2019 season. He is a career .269 / .317 / .369 hitter with a 91 OPS + in nine seasons of big league. But Simmons brings elite contact ability to the powerful Twins lineup, ranking in the top 10 percent of MLB qualifiers in puff rate and take-out rate in each of the past two campaigns.
