Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed papers to run for mayor of New York, the city’s campaign finance council confirmed on Wednesday.
Yang’s depot has the potential to immediately reverse a race that was shaping up to be a contest between long-entrenched city politicians. It comes just days after a new poll gave him a slight lead among fellow Democrats running for mayor.
The entrepreneur sparked huge success in the Democratic presidential primaries with his call for a universal basic income – $ 1,000 a month for every American over the age of 18, unconditional, funded by a tax on businesses benefiting from the ‘automating. But his wide popularity on the Internet did not translate into votes as he had hoped.
He was widely reported to be considering a run for mayor, and the public policy poll released on Monday was the second poll in recent weeks to show him a lead over Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
Yang would get 17% support in a Democratic primary, according to the PPP survey. This gives him a 1 point lead over Adams, with all other contestants at least 10 points behind.
However, the field is far from being defined. Some 40% of voters said they didn’t know who they would support, and the poll also left out several declared or potential candidates, including Representative Max Rose, who recently filed documents to explore a race.
The New York primary election will be held on June 22 of next year. As of Tuesday, at least 35 people had filed documents with the finance council to run for town hall.
