Originally spotted by the team at Android Police, when applied, your Pixel’s dark theme will look more like a dark gray-blue than pitch black or AMOLED. Now, that might be a frustrating adjustment if you prefer the potentially battery-saving pitch black color scheme that’s present on Android 11 and earlier.
As AP notes, the exact shade of the dark theme with the Android 12 Developer Preview is # 171c21 rather than a pure black color. How do you feel about this change is up to you, as some find absolute black better than a gray tint, while others don’t care. I have to admit I’m in the latter group, it’s not a big deal, but we can understand if this concerns you.
Nothing else in the dark theme has changed in Android 12, all accent colors you selected in Styles and Wallpapers section will remain unchanged. It’s worth noting that the tweak applies to almost every facet of your Pixel device if you side-load the Android 12 Developer Preview. A weird quirk is that areas like the Settings menu and the app drawer still retain the dark and black theme in developer Android 12’s first release.
It might just be proof of the extra customization options we’ve come to expect from the in-depth theming system we found evidence of a few weeks ago. We really hope that more options become available, as we are sure that for some this potential dark theme change in Android 12 might infuriate a good number of people.
