The current Made by Google lineup is visually defined by a front camera in the upper left corner of the screen. You get used to it over time, but those who are annoyed with the Pixel 5 hole punch can now hide it on Android 12.
Android 12 Developer Preview 1 adds (via Android Police) a new “Hide” option to the “Show Cutout” menu available under “Drawing” – just over halfway down the screen – in “Developer Options”.
Activation applies a black bar to the status bar which works to partially hide the perforation of the Pixel 4a, 4a 5G and 5. The time, notifications and other system icons stay in place with the new darker background.
There are currently a few bugs in the implementation, especially on the Pixel Launcher home screen, but these should be resolved as previews continue.
This option exists primarily for developers, while Pixel 5 owners who see visual issues in apps due to perforation are best served by contacting those developers directly to resolve them. That said, Android 12 does offer a possible solution for those annoyed by the cutoff.
The Developer Options menu is activated by going to Settings> About Phone and tapping the “Version number” seven times at the bottom of the screen. After that, visit Settings> System> Advanced to access it.
