Visually, the biggest change coming with Android 12 is the ability for the operating system to change its theme to match your wallpaper. This is an option that will be available for third-party apps as well, and long before the final version of Android 12, a few apps are already adding support for Material You.
To briefly recap, Material You is the next step in material design, the style Google has been using from Android Marshmallow to Android, the web, and its various products. Announced during I / O 2021, this new design language is expected to make its first appearance in Android 12 specifically on Pixel phones to begin with. To date, Google hasn’t added Material You to most apps, although in Beta 3 we did notice it in the Google Camera app.
In terms of third-party support, some extraordinarily talented developers have managed to get the feature to work on their apps even before Google released official documentation on how to do it – an impressive feat!
One of the apps already implementing Material You is Sleep as Android, a years old Android community favorite that turns your phone into a sleep tracker. The developer, Urbandroid, explained to Android Police that the app is now “99% Material You-styled” and of course it reacts to the wallpapers as they are set, with the slight caveat of only choosing one color to base the theme, by simply changing the saturation and brightness to differentiate the elements. Not all parts of the app have been themed yet and there are still some readability tweaks to be made, but things are off to a good start, especially considering Google hasn’t finalized the APIs.

long time 9to5Google Contributor Dylan Roussel has also updated his application, Inware, with support for the Material You theme. This update is already in the Play Store for those on the beta track as well. Just install and make sure the “Use System Colors” toggle is turned on. Personally, I have found the effect the most obvious when dark mode is on.
Update 7/17: Tasker is not included in our original list above. The popular “Power User” app for Android is already testing Material You support in beta 5.13.0. As detailed on Reddit, Material You support is available in Settings> UI.
