Companies as large as Google have to run a lot of testing before pushing changes to production, although sometimes things can still go very badly. One of the ways that Google and other companies are testing new features is by running a public beta tester program. Through these programs, companies are enlisting the help of ordinary users like you and me to try out new features before they are released to the general public. Google maintains a number of beta tester programs for its Android apps, and today the company opened a beta for the Android Auto app.
As more and more automakers add support for Android Auto to their in-car infotainment systems, Google needs users to test the latest features and provide feedback on any issues or bugs they discover. It’s obviously impossible for Google to test Android Auto with every combination of phone and headunit on the market, so it makes sense for them to ask users for help. Just note that if you sign up for the program, you may face bugs and broken features which could lead to a frustrating experience down the road.
Android Auto is preinstalled on all Android phones running Android 10 or later, but updates are delivered to the app through the Google Play Store. Beta updates will also be delivered through Google Play, but you will need to register for the test program first by clicking on this link and signing in to the Google Account that you want to register for the program. If you decide to quit the beta program, all you need to do is uninstall the beta and then install the latest public stable version from Google Play. If you’d rather not wait anyway, you can always download the latest beta or stable version from third-party APK hosting sites like APKMirror. Alternatively, you can just follow Android Auto’s XDA coverage to find out what’s new in the latest release or what’s coming in a future release.
