Android Auto to get better auto-open support

The latest beta of Android Auto says the app can automatically open to more car infotainment centers.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an app that Google downloaded from the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like if they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.

New auto-launch settings

Today, whether or not Android Auto starts when you plug in your phone is usually determined by your car’s infotainment system. For example, cars from Subaru and Nissan will launch Android Auto as soon as you connect via USB or Wi-Fi, while Hyundai requires you to manually switch to the display of Android Auto.

In the latest Android Auto beta update, version 6.7.1128, we see that Google is preparing a new setting called “Initial Video Focus” which controls whether or not your car should automatically open to Android Auto. It looks like the new setting will have three choices.

The first is “Let the main unit decide,” which is similar to how Android Auto behaves today, letting your infotainment system choose whether or not to launch the projection. Next, we have “Request focus if projecting in a previous player”, which should only run on Android Auto if you used it on your last player. The third option, “Request focus on startup”, should always launch Android Auto when it connects to your infotainment system.

Hopefully, this “Initial Video Focus” option may allow more cars to automatically open in Android Auto. Most importantly, it will be do not run on your own if you don’t want to. It’s good to see Google working on introducing more choice and control for Android Auto fans. For now, although the setting does not appear to be active in the app, even with the update installed.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefits some APK Insight teardowns.
