Android developers can enable rounded square icons from Google Play – 9to5Google

Last March, Google introduced a new requirement for rounded square icons for the Google Play Store on Android and Chrome OS. App developers can choose to immediately activate the new icon specification, Google's contact list already containing the updated style.

The goal is "to bring Google Play more consistency and appearance" to different UI layouts, form factors, and devices. It prohibits transparent backgrounds, with Google dynamically adding rounded corners and shadows to icons. This applies to the Play Store on Android phones and tablets, as well as on Chromebooks.

In the Google Play console, the Graphic Resources section of Product Details shows how the required change will take effect on June 24th. According to the previously announced schedule, developers can start downloading the updated icon style as of today.

Let us know when your icon meets the new specification. If you are not quite ready, you can continue to use the old specifications for the moment. We will automatically reduce your icon on June 24th.

In fact, developers who are ready "can now use the new icon specification". Google Contacts is an example of an updated list on the Play Store. Of course, developers can continue to exploit their existing art until the deadline.

As of May 1st, old icons that do not meet the standard can not be downloaded and will not be accepted. By the end of June, new icons must be added. If not, Google will automatically convert the original icons to "legacy mode". This operation places an existing icon of any shape in a white, rounded square.

This change does not apply to Google Play for Android Auto, Android TV and Wear OS, or APK launcher icons on all platforms.

Google has published tips and resources for Android developers to update their app icons based on new attributes, sizing, shadows, radius, and angles.
