The Pixel "pill" is at the bottom of the home screen on every Google Pixel smartphone running Android 9 Pie as of this minute. This small object allows the user to navigate the entire smartphone, to a certain extent. A bit of software currently under development at Google seems to suggest that the company will keep this little pill in action – and may well allow it to chew on the back button until it's dead and forever.
In a set of what are currently known as Android Q experimental gestures, in development, we can see a set of ways to make software work. Through the operating system, you will navigate, all with the same button. Like we use the red nubbin on a ThinkPad or a trackball on a BlackBerry. What year is it still?
Homemade Android Pill Gestures Q:
• Press once: Home.
• Slide to the left: back.
• Drag right: opens the most recent application.
• Swipe right and hold: scroll through recent apps.
• Drag Up: Opens the overview view of recent applications (horizontally).
• Drag and hold: open the App drawer.
• Back button: N / A
Android Pie home Pill Gestures:
• Press once: Home.
• Drag to the left: no action.
• Drag right: opens the most recent application.
• Swipe right and hold: scroll through recent apps.
• Drag Up: Opens the overview view of recent applications (horizontally).
• Slide up and hold: No action.
• Back button: Back.
The Android Q developer overview probably will not work with this update – these are the kinds of things developers might be up to but will not be complete soon. Until now, it seems that Google is getting closer and closer to a software configuration as simple as possible to merge multiple systems.
Do not forget that if the rumors remain correct, Google will someday integrate all the software into a monster operating system. With this software, Google would conquer the world! Or something much less exciting. For example, different versions of the same branded software will still be Chrome, Android and all that will follow.
