ANdroid enthusiasts have tried to note dessert names beginning with Q – which could have been the name of the next Android operating system. However, this time, Google has decided to desert desserts and officially name Android Q as Android 10.
Breaking the 10-year legacy of naming the new versions of Android after the desserts, Google has decided to simplify things by naming them Android 10, Android 11 and so on.
In a blog post, the company said that "over the years, we have heard that names were not always understood by all members of the global community."
For example, L and R do not have a distinct pronunciation in some languages. It is therefore not immediately obvious to some people that Android Lollipop has arrived after KitKat.
In addition, some names of previous versions of Android, such as Pie and Marshmallow, are not considered a dessert in many places and may not be as popular.
In other words, dessert names were fun but could not always be told to users. While the new naming system seems a lot less delicious and fun, Google says it will be helpful to make Android names "clear and readable for everyone in the world."
