Android Q: still active display of songs being played

Each version of Android in recent years has been reiterated on the ambient display, Android Q performing today a handful of adjustments. The currently playing media is now displayed below the time, while the battery status has been moved to a more logical location.

For starters, the name "Ambient Display" – in any case in beta 1 – does not appear in the settings. In display mode, a new "Locked Screen" combo menu has a "When to show" section that users can set to "Always On". Searching for "Ambience" in the settings, however, displays the appropriate page.

Meanwhile, when the media is playing, this is now reflected on the display always enabled. Appearing under the hour, it replaces the day and date, as well as the weather and temperature of the Pixel Launcher. It features the application icon, the title of the song and the artist. Until now, we've tested it with videos from YouTube and YouTube Music, as well as from Spotify.

Elsewhere, the battery status is no longer displayed at the bottom of the screen. Although this location makes sense because it is near the physical USB-C port and makes it possible to note the charging speed, Android users are more familiar with the percentage of battery located in the upper right corner.

This is the case in Android Q and corresponds to the position when the the screen is active and unlocked. In addition, this new location is less likely to clutter the track being played on pixels 2 and 3.
