Google introduced Android Slices to I / O 2018 and began testing the new UI paradigm later that year with third-party applications. Slices are designed to bring out the key features of apps in natural places, such as Google Search. The shortcuts to the Settings application on Pixel devices are now starting to be used.
Last November, at the Android Developers Conference, Google explained how it would begin to integrate Slice as part of an early access program with third party applications such as Doist and Kayak. In addition to the results on the device (apps, contacts, music, etc.) and on the web, the Slices will show up when users search with the Google app.
Slices for different device preferences are now starting to appear on Pixel devices running Android 9 Pie. A request for "Bluetooth" or "Wi-Fi" in the Google search box will show an online toggle to quickly enable / disable this setting. These results show the application icon Blue Settings left, the name and the right rocker.
Some include the added context, with Wi-Fi indicating the name of the network to which you are connected. Before the slices, the result would appear in the same way, but with no possibility of action. Users can still tap to open the full settings page.
Slices take a second or two to fully charge. For example, if you type "blu", the shortcut appears quickly, but the flip appears only after "bluetooth".
Google has already shown that the settings are prime candidates for slices. In fact, the examples presented by society were much more advanced. One for "Mobile Data" indicated online the number of gigabytes used, while a mock-up for "Brightness Level" featured a slider directly in the slice. The latter does not even appear as a toggle today.
Other examples of applications include Lyft surfacing shortcuts for quick booking of a trip, or Google Photos displaying a carousel of images directly in Search.
Parameter slices have appeared in recent weeks via a server-side update. It is active on four Pixel devices verified today and on which the latest Google application is installed. Slices "go back as far as Android 4.4", but we've only seen them so far with Pie.
