New York Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar has opted for an end-of-season surgery to repair a ruptured labrum in his right shoulder, the team said on Wednesday night.

Yankees chief doctor Christopher Ahmad will perform the operation Monday at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Andujar, a finalist in the American League last year, was dismissed by the injury from April 1 to May 3 and had serious problems on his return.

After getting 3 points out of 34 without further success, he returned to the list of injured on Monday. A follow-up MRI on Tuesday showed no change to his shoulder compared to the April MRI that had initially revealed the tear, director Aaron Boone said Tuesday.

Boone had said that Andujar was discussing a possible operation with the team and his family.

Andujar, 24, played a major role in the Yankees playoff race last season, averaging .297 with 27 homers and 92 RBIs.

Minus Andujar this season, the Yankees have trusted Gio Urshela at third base.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
