MyHeritage, a “family history discovery” company – as it describes itself – released “Deep Nostalgia,” which uses AI to animate photos. Upload an image and the AI produces a gif that smiles, blinks, and moves its eyes.
It’s based on D-ID technology, and yowsa is still troubling!
I’m sure some people will have a heartwarming moving photo of their grandfather. Personally, I find this both a) very technologically intriguing and b) bizarre. Even MyHeritage itself notes in its FAQ that its mileage may vary on this one …

Indeed, the results can be controversial and it is difficult to remain indifferent to this technology. We invite you to create videos using this feature and share them on social media to see what your friends and family think about them. This feature is intended for nostalgic use, that is, to bring beloved ancestors back to life. Our pilot videos do not include speech to avoid abuse, such as creating “fake deep videos” of living people. Please use this feature on your own historical photos and not on photos of living people without their permission.
MyHeritage markets this as a way to animate old family photos, but as I understand it, there’s nothing stopping anyone from using it to animate a new photo. So: How is this going to be used to troll and abuse people? It will happen, although I cannot yet risk knowing what forms it will take.
