ABC Grey’s Anatomy once again found a way to deliver a surprise. After the promo at the end of last week’s episode revealed that Chyler Leigh’s Lexie Gray would be joining Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) in Season 17’s beach motif, fans thought they knew exactly what expect a sweet sister reunion tonight. They always had this, but there was a twist – Lexie was joined by Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). The recurring couple got back together when they both died from a plane crash in the Season 8 finale, and Seattle Grace Mercy West was later renamed Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital in their memory. .

With Dane and Leigh tonight, Grey’s Anatomy has completed the return of the show’s four longtime doctors who tragically passed away, including Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, who recurs in the dream sequences, and TR Knight’s George O’Malley, who was featured in a December episode. Dempsey and Dane have also been the best hearts in longtime drama with their nicknames McDreamy and McSteamy, respectively. Separately, another Gray alumnus Sarah Drew, whose character April Kepner is very much alive, is also returning for an appearance this season.
As Meredith, still in a coma on a ventilator in real life, sat on the beach with Lexie, the younger brother said, “It’s so beautiful, I love it here.”
Meredith said, “Me too.” When asked if she would stay on the beach – that is, on the land between life and death – Meredith abstained, saying she didn’t know the rules.
“I don’t think there are any rules,” Lexie said, recalling how much she loved rules when she was alive.

Enter Mark Sloan. “You totally did it,” he interjected.
Mentioning his daughter Sofia, Mark told Meredith that it was “early” to join the dead.
“I don’t know how to get in,” Meredith remarked. “I keep seeing Derek, and he won’t help me come back or get me close enough to touch me.”
Mark said, “It’s not his, it’s yours.”
With that, the conversation shifted to Mark and Lexie’s relationship status.
“So are you two together?” asked Meredith.
“On your beach, it looks like we are,” Mark replied before he and Lexie frolicked in the waves as Meredith watched them with a smile. “I love it here,” she said to herself.
