Our elected officials have been sorely missed in 2020, but one of the most tangible ways we have failed us has been to deliberately ignore the realities of the threat posed by COVID-19, resulting in what will soon be a full year of restrictions and locks. It’s hard to really understand how long this lasts, however, so here’s a clearer illustration of how long the coronavirus nightmare lasted: As of this weekend, the US box office now has of them Thrillers by Liam Neeson since the start of the pandemic. Of them! And no Marvel movies! The first was Honest thief in October, and now we have the Clint Eastwood-esque The sniper—Which stars Liam Neeson as a true Certified American living on a ranch near the Mexican border and pointing his gun at immigrants entering his property. It won the box office last weekend, making a pretty impressive $ 3.2 million. (It was also, for the record, the third Liam Neeson films pandemic if you count comedy Made in italy. Fourth if you count Ordinary love Starting from February. The man works.)
It was enough to dethrone Wonder Woman 1984, who was still making $ 2.6 million (for a respectable total of $ 35.8, which huge at the counter during this pandemic). Unfortunately for Diana Of Themyscira, however, any hope of beating the total of The Croods: A New Age looking to escape: he grossed just over $ 2 million last weekend, which is not much less than WW84, and it took just under $ 40 million. It will have to fall quickly to Wonder Woman 1984 to catch up – not that that, or anything, really matters.
The next spots on the list, like last week, remain unchanged: World news made $ 1 million, Monster hunter makes $ 920,000, Fatal made $ 530,000 (big drop between those two), and Promising young woman made only $ 430,000. The necessary Disney reissue is doubtfully necessary for the week (The Emperor’s New Routine this time) only made $ 169,000, and everything that follows is pretty grim. But, as we keep saying, it’s probably not safe to go to the movies right now anyway, so… yeah.
