Another major Chrome OS update bug is preventing Chromebook users

Somehow, a major bug has crept through three experimental channels and made its way into a stable Chrome OS channel – AKA the channel that the vast, vast majority of Chromebook owners use. This bug is found in Chrome OS 91.0.4472.165, and it does not allow users to reconnect to their Chromebooks after updating, and in some cases their laptop is in a boot loop so that they cannot access the lock screen. In these cases, you will need to create a Chromebook recovery USB drive using the Chromebook recovery utility and use it to re-image your Chromebook.

If the update was downloaded but the installation was not completed, do not turn off your Chromebook. The update will install the next time you restart or shut down the system.

Google seems to be aware of the situation and should be working on a fix soon, but the update hasn’t been pulled yet it seems, so don’t go to the About Chrome OS screen, don’t check for updates or turn off your Chromebook if you can help it.

Users who unfortunately received the update first are currently stuck off their machines, at least until they wipe them off with the power on. Once affected users have factory reset their Chromebook, they can set it up and come back to it, but keep in mind that this is a factory reset and erase all local data and linux program data. If you can wait for a fix, you might be able to wait and then update your Chromebook from Guest Mode, but we don’t have a timeline for a fix.

We reach out to Google to ask them when they might have a timeline for the fix and how it happened twice in such a short time. We’ll update this story as things go.
