Anthony Davis wearing LeBron No. 23 with Lakers waiting

LeBron James' plan to give Anthony Davis his uniform number will be postponed to next season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

James had wanted to give his new Los Angeles Lakers teammate the number 23 – which Davis had spent his entire career in New Orleans – for the 2019-2020 season.

When the Lakers asked the league for their change of jersey, they were informed that the deadline of March 15 was over, Yahoo sources told sources close to the situation. However, the league would have allowed it if the team had managed to get along with Nike, the maker of the jersey, sources said.

But because of production issues and the massive financial impact that Nike could have absorbed on the already-manufactured stocks of No. 23 James, Nike has not been able to meet demand this season, have said sources.

Out of respect for fans who have already bought James' jersey and not to be disturbed by a team in contention for a championship, the star of the Lakers will avoid seeking the change of number for this season.

Davis can access a free agency next summer because he holds a player option for the 2020-2021 season.

James was to return to number 6, which he wore when he was a member of the Miami Heat.

Davis is scheduled to hold his introductory press conference at the Lakers on Saturday.
