New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo has tested positive for COVID-19, manager Aaron Boone announced on Sunday.
Boone said Rizzo, who turned 32 on Sunday, has certain symptoms and has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list.
Rizzo joins wide receiver Gary Sanchez and starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery as Yankees players who recently tested positive for the virus.
Players who test positive for COVID-19 are sidelined for at least 10 days before being allowed to return, according to MLB protocols.
First baseman Luke Voit was activated from the injured list on Sunday and replaced Rizzo in the series final roster against the Seattle Mariners. Sees had been sidelined by inflammation of the left knee.
Rizzo, acquired by the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs before the trade deadline, has reached 0.281 with three homers and six RBIs in nine games since arriving in New York.
Rizzo, a cancer survivor, said in June while with the Cubs that he wanted to see more “data” before deciding to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
