The biggest production shake the Yankees landed on the trade deadline hit the COVID-19 injured list.
Anthony Rizzo became the fourth Yankee to test positive for COVID-19 last week, joining Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery and Gary Sanchez.
The 32-year-old first baseman, who learned of the positive result after Saturday’s win in the Bronx, is experiencing symptoms but is “fine,” according to manager Aaron Boone.
Rizzo said in June that he had not received the vaccine because he was awaiting more data. Boone declined to say if Rizzo had been trapped.
“He’s obviously been great for us in every way,” said Boone. “Obviously a little disappointed, but I hope for a chance to rest and well and hopefully be back as soon as possible and get back to making an impact on us.”
In nine games with the Yankees since joining the Cubs, Rizzo has beaten 0.281 (9v32) with three homers and a RBI in each of his first six games.
The Yankees activated Luke Voit (knee) from the injured roster to take Rizzo’s place on the roster.
Voir, who had lost his first base job while on the IL with the Yankees trading for Rizzo, was in the starting lineup for the Series Finals against the Mariners.
Voir had competed in the 10-day IL – his third stint of the year – coming out of the All-Star break.
“Really excited to see Luke Voit back here today,” said Boone. “He’s here, ready to go. Obviously, we know how much of an impact Luke can have. I can’t wait to see him in the middle of our roster today.
