Tennessee-Martin men’s basketball coach Anthony Stewart died suddenly on Sunday, the school said.
He was 50 years old.

Stewart had been head coach of the Skyhawks since 2016, when he was promoted to associate head coach in first place to replace Heath Schroyer. He had been the associate head coach under Schroyer for two seasons. As head coach, Stewart led UT Martin to a 22-13 record in his first season at the helm, earning a berth in the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament. The 22 wins tied the school’s record for most in one season.
Prior to joining the staff at UT Martin, Stewart worked as an assistant coach in Ohio, southern Illinois, Wyoming, Long Beach State, and Columbus State Community College. He played basketball and baseball at Mount Union University.
“What I will remember the most about Coach Stewart is that he focused on developing our young men to be leaders in their communities, leaders in the market. work and leaders at home, ”said Keith Carver, Chancellor of UT Martin. “He always emphasized the development of the whole person, well beyond athletics.”
Parker Stewart, one of Stewart’s three children, transferred from Pittsburgh to Tennessee Martin after the 2017-18 season to play for his father. Last season, Stewart won the All-Ohio Valley second team honors and averaged 19.0 points.
