In the hour-long livestream, the New York Democrat discussed warnings she and other members of Congress had had in the days leading up to the violent insurgency on Capitol Hill and provided new details on the “very close encounter” in which she thought she was “going to die”, as she revealed in an Instagram Live a few weeks ago.
Ocasio-Cortez also revealed that she is a survivor of sexual assault and described how the trauma of one experience can be made worse by another. She also compared the tactics of those who maintained Trump’s lies about the election to that of the aggressors.
“Why I think it’s important for us to hold this accountable is because we know that … when they say, ‘can we just move on’,” what they’re really saying , she continued, is “‘can we just forget this happened so I can do it again without recourse.'”
Almost a week before the attack, Ocasio-Cortez said she had started receiving text messages from other members of Congress telling her she had to prepare for violence on Electoral College certification day. These warnings were then reinforced by his own experiences in public in Washington DC in the two days leading up to the attack.
On January 6, as Trump supporters began to clash with police outside the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez was searching on her phone for a place to have lunch for herself and her legislative director when they suddenly overheard someone. a knock on his office door. She said there was no screaming or voices identifying who was there, just the sound of loud banging, “like someone was trying to break the door.”
She ran across her desk and into the bathroom, hiding against the wall behind the door.
“So I’m just starting to hear those screams, ‘Where is she? Where is she? “” Said Ocasio-Cortez. “It was the moment when I thought it was all over.”
She said she believed she would die, reflecting that “if this was the trip my life was taking I felt like things were going to be okay,” she recalls, wiping the tears from her eyes. “I had accomplished my goal.”
But then she heard her legislative director call her out, and she learned that the man knocking on the door was a Capitol cop. At the time, she was unsure if he had good intentions, saying that “the situation was not feeling right”.
“He was looking at me with tremendous anger and hostility,” she said. “We couldn’t read whether it was a good or a bad situation.”
The officer eventually told her to go to another building, but did not provide information on where the members of Congress were being held, she said.
Capitol Police officials did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News’ request for comment.
Ocasio-Cortez later described how, after arriving in the other building and looking for another place to hide, she spotted Rep. Katie Porter and barricaded herself in her office with her staff for the rest of the lock.
Speaking to MSNBC Monday night, Porter told how her colleague frantically searched for a place to hide inside the office.
“I was like, ‘Well, don’t worry. I am a mom. I’m calm. I have everything we need here. We could live here for a month in this office. ‘ And she said, “I just hope to become a mom. I hope I don’t die today,” “Porter said.
