Democrats are reiterating their calls to wrap the Supreme Court, demanding action after the court on Wednesday refused to stop Texas’ controversial abortion law.
“The Republicans promised to topple Roe v Wade, and they did,” tweeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y.
“Democrats can either abolish filibuster and expand the tribunal, or do nothing as the bodies, rights and lives of millions of people are sacrificed for the rule of a far-right minority. It shouldn’t. not be a difficult decision. “

The Supreme Court did not actually overturn Roe v. Wade. By dismissing the procedural challenge to Texas law, it effectively allowed the state to at least temporarily bypass Roe’s limits on abortion bans. The law prohibits abortions after a heartbeat can be detected – often thought to take place at five to six weeks gestational age.

She was referring to another decision blocking the Biden administration’s extension of a moratorium on coronavirus-related evictions.
“There is no common ground when it comes to fundamental rights and freedoms,” said Mondaire Jones representative, DN.Y. “There is only one way to take the threat of the Supreme Court majority seriously and protect millions of Americans. We need to #ExpandTheCourt.”
Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation has fueled Democrats’ fears that the Conservatives may succeed in gutting Roe after decades of precedent in favor of abortion access. With a virtual tie in the Senate, Democrats are expected to break down the obstruction in order to bypass the 60-vote threshold to confirm new judges.
Jones also promoted the Judicial Act, which would add four judges to the court.
One of the bill’s sponsors, Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., Reiterated his call for legislation on Thursday.
“This Supreme Court ruling on abortion cannot be the last word,” he tweeted. “The Democrats in the Senate have the power to fix this problem now by breaking down filibuster and passing my legislation to expand the Supreme Court.”

For decades the tribunal has been made up of nine judges, but Democrats argue that should change after confirmations from Barrett and Judge Brett Kavanaugh, which they have suggested as illegitimate.
Despite their enthusiasm, Congressional Democrats are likely to meet resistance from moderates like Sen. Joe Manchin, DW.Va., who has voiced his opposition to both the lawsuits and the end of filibuster.
