Respawn, the studio behind Apex Legends, admits that the deployment of cosmetics for the limited-time Iron Crown event has gone awry and is trying to turn the situation around. In a statement posted on the EA blog, Drew McCoy, Respawn Project Manager, explains what's wrong and how the studio plans to fix it.
In short, the Iron Crown event offered several new cosmetic products that could only be obtained through Apex packs purchased with real money. You can get a few packs while playing, but to get the full collection – and a special inheritance ax that can only be bought if you win all the other items first – you have to spend over $ 150.
"With the Iron Crown event, we missed the goal when we broke our promise by making Apex Packs the only one way to get what many consider to be the coolest skins we've released" Said McCoy.
To solve this problem, Respawn will offer the twelve exclusive items to the event in the store for 1,800 Apex coins (about $ 18), the standard cost for a Legendary skin. This deployment will begin on August 20th and will continue throughout the week as new skins are added. The studio also promised that during future events, it would provide more ways to get items outside Apex packs. Previously, the only way to get the skins was to buy Apex packs for 700 pieces.
The blog goes on to say that Respawn recognizes that it must be more effective to allow players to know what to expect from its event structures. This event works differently from previous events such as the Legendary Hunt, and McCoy says that future events might be different again in another way. He says this event reminded the studio that he needed to be more effective in communicating what events could be expected, while he was trying new things.
"Our goal has not been to ensure that our players have the last penny, and we have structured the game so that all players benefit from those who choose to spend money – Events like Legendary Hunt or Iron Crown exist so we can keep playing – invest in creating more free content for all players, "said McCoy. "This week has been a very rewarding learning experience for us and we are going ahead with the lessons to continue to bring you the best possible experience."
The main draw of the Iron Crown event is the new Limited Time Solos mode, which allows players to compete like everyone else while trying to be the last player in the running. Apex Legends has been a royal team battle since its launch, and Solos has been a much-needed feature of the community. But like all Solos modes in traditional team games, some people formed alliances outside the game and teamed up to gain a competitive advantage.
