Apex Legends the developers are putting the brakes on their plans to eliminate “tap-strafing,” a meta-tactical move experienced players use to be even more mobile. Monday workshop said he had “discovered unexpected side effects” and “delay our planned change to a later fix”.
“After further testing, we concluded that we need to take more time to get it right in order to make sure the associated motion mechanics don’t get caught in the crossfire,” Respawn Entertainment wrote on Twitter.
On August 31, Respawn said the strafing days were numbered. The movement is a difficult turn, executed in the air, which is commonly used by keyboard and mouse players on Apex Legends‘PC version. The inputs needed for tap-strafe can also be tied to different buttons (or scroll wheel) on a gaming mouse, making it easier to turn.
Two weeks ago, Respawn called tap-strapping “out of reach” to most audiences in a game that fully supports cross-platform play. The movement “also lacks readability / counter-play and is exacerbated by movement capabilities,” the studio said. A great example of this is the Launch Pad Ultimate that Octane can deploy, as the double jump it allows makes tap-strapping even more efficient.
Apex Legends gamers at first scoffed at the change, saying the strafing as a benefit for keyboard and mouse players contradicted the aim assist benefit exclusive to gamepad users. still others contested that the mixed population of PC and console gamers was a significant reason for the change. PC gamers, by default, are paired with other PC gamers, and while some choose to use a gamepad, gamers have stated that Respawn should implement input-based matchmaking and leave tap-strafing alone. .
Respawn has not given any indication of what changes, if any, will come when the tap-strafing will be resolved, when it will, or when the next patch will even launch. Apex Legends is currently in its 10th season (subtitled Emergence), and the developers have already nerfed the new character Emergence introduced with a patch in mid-August.
