Apple has warned the iPhone 12 lineup is delayed, but the company may have just disclosed a surprising new release date.

Spotted by eagle-eyed 9to5Mac readers, Apple today briefly posted a test thread to its official YouTube account for a live event to be held on September 10. This is the same date as the iPhone 11 launch last year, and it fits perfectly with other previous iPhone launch dates: September 12 (iPhone XS, X), September 7 (iPhone 7 ), September 9 (iPhone 6S, 6).

Update 22/08: according to ZDNet, the release of the iPhone 12 looks set to have a “One More Thing…” moment, with Apple announcing the resurrection of its ambitious AirPower wireless charger. AirPower was supposed to set itself apart from the competition by allowing iPhones and AirPods to be placed anywhere on the mat to charge. The problem was, it required so many wireless charging rings that it caused excessive heat build-up. Apple has been urged to resolve this issue with the adding magnets, which help devices line up with the mat and reduce the number of rings required. In view of Apple’s plans to introduce a iPhone completely portless in 2021, that’s something Apple has to do the second time around.

Despite this correlation, there have been a few attempts to bring this down. Reliable tipster Jon Prosser rejected it, which is to be expected since he promised a much later date (which was also disputed). Oddly enough, most of the doubts boil down to two false assumptions.

First of all, a popular claim Apple never hosts events on a Thursday. This is not true. Apple held Q3 hardware launch events on a Thursday in 2010, 2014, and 2016. There is also a myth that iPhones only launch on Tuesday, when two of the last four iPhone launches (iPhone XS, 7) occurred on a Wednesday.

Second, when Apple’s CFO Luca Maestri confirmed that the iPhone 12 line would be “available a few weeks later,” he was talking about their offer, with many believing their announcement should also be delayed as a result. Ahead of Maestri’s comments, the event was set for early September, while two subsequent leaks muddied the waters with claims of split release schedules.

All this means that Thursday, September 10 is perfectly believable. In addition, Apple also has a long history of under-selling to investors. After making the claim “a few weeks later” in its recent (stratospheric) financial results, the company is now likely to work day and night to over-deliver.

Is the new iPhone 12 lineup worth whatever the extra wait? Yes and no. The line features new 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch screen sizes, a massive performance upgrade, a sleek new design, smart camera technology, competitive pricing, and 5G. Small-sized batteries, another big notch and another year behind rival display technology, work against these.

The irony with all of this launch / release speculation is that the biggest winners could be the iPhone enhancers who choose to wait a bit longer anyway.
