Apple adds an extra step to App Store subscriptions to prevent accidental purchases

Apple has added an additional pop-up screen in which users can confirm they want to pay for recurring app subscriptions. Once users have downloaded apps that require subscriptions or tapped on the subscription options built into the app, the pop-up window will appear after the initial Face ID confirmation screen. or Touch ID.

The "Confirm Subscription" menu explains to users that the subscription will continue unless they cancel in the settings. This is useful information to know, especially since most applications attract users by offering free trials, which may not realize that their cards are still billed after the end of the test. The feature was spotted for the first time by the developer David Barnard on Twitter.

This update is part of Apple's ongoing efforts to make integrated payment options more transparent. In January, the company began requiring application subscriptions to report the total cost to users before registering to tackle misleading subscriptions in apps.

This feature will also be helpful in reducing the number of scams on Touch ID phones, where accidental pressing on the home button could trigger a fingerprint scan to confirm purchases. Some fitness apps have prompted users to make in-app purchases while scanning their fingerprints for "fitness tracking data." The new popup screen can serve as an extra layer of protection against bad actors.
