Apple can bring back MagSafe and SD slots on MacBook

Apple engineers apparently feel a bit of nostalgia in Cupertino. After reports that the company is apparently considering killing the Touch Bar, a report from Bloomberg suggests the company is considering bringing back the MagSafe charger and SD card slots.

For those of you unfamiliar with MagSafe, this was the company’s way of keeping your laptop (or you) from crashing when you inevitably tripped over the charger. The company started ditching MagSafe after it introduced USB-C with the 2015 MacBook. As great as USB-C is, it doesn’t do much to keep you from tripping over.

An upcoming MacBook Air, due out in late 2021 or sometime in 2022, will apparently feature MagSafe again. It will also feature a pair of USB-4 ports (still using the USB-C form), and will be smaller and lighter than the current MacBook Air. This will be achieved in part by shrinking the glasses.

It’s unclear what shape the new MagSafe charger will take – whether Apple will relaunch the old connector or offer a new one.

Anyway, it seems strange to me. The company recently bragged about no longer including chargers with its smartphones, citing environmental reasons, so it seems odd to reintroduce a charger when USB-C is such a reliable connector for devices that match its capabilities. power supply.

But according to Bloomberg, MagSafe’s return is an attempt to appeal to Mac loyalists. To that end, it is reported that it would bring back the SD card slot on the MacBook Pro – a feature we haven’t seen since 2016. This will certainly appeal to high profile photographers on MacOS; It’s 2020, but SD cards don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Apple has apparently also considered cellular connectivity and Face ID on the next Macs, but none of those features are likely to arrive this year. A 15-inch MacBook Air was also in the works, but the project has apparently been scrapped for now.
