Apple's autonomous car project, Project Titan, is one of the biggest secrets of the technology industry. Although the company has not yet released any product related to autonomous cars, CEO Tim Cook said in an interview with Bloomberg in 2017 that it was "the mother of all projects artificial intelligence ".
However, many other competitors have a head start on Apple in the field of self-driving technologies, including Waymo, the Alphabet company coming out of Google's self-driving car project. Waymo has been working for almost 10 years on autonomous cars. He is already testing a lift service in Phoenix.
Last week, new data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles showed that Apple's autonomous cars had the worst disengagement rating, or cases where a human driver had to take over the automated system.
And last month, Apple withdrew 200 employees from its autonomous car division, CNBC reported. Some of these employees have been reassigned to Apple's AI division. The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that former Tesla chief of engineering, Doug Field, who heads the Titan project, decided to make the reduction. This decision indicated that Apple could consider focusing more on AI, not just through projects such as autonomous cars.
