Apple Delays Employee Return to Office Amid Covid Outbreak – Deadline

Apple has told employees they are not expected to return to the office until Oct. 1 at the earliest, according to multiple reports. The largest company in the world had previously set the return of its employees at the beginning of September.

In an email sent to staff on Monday, Apple said the new date could change again depending on the spread of the virus. He promised to give employees at least a month’s notice before their scheduled return, according to a document viewed by The New York Times.

Although the numbers are still relatively low, Santa Clara County in California, where the iPhone maker’s headquarters is located, has seen cases and its test positivity rate quadruple since the end of June. Areas that house other offices have also been hit by outbreaks. New York has seen its daily number of cases almost triple in four weeks. Texas has seen cases more than double and test positivity nearly tripled over the same period.

Not all company employees are excited to return to the office. Recode reported that some wrote a group letter to CEO Tim Cook and other executives on Monday protesting the “one size fits all” solution to remote working.

Cook had previously mandated a return to the office at least three days a week starting in September. Seventeen hundred Apple workers – some of whom had left Cupertino during the pandemic or had medical concerns about the return – signed a letter protesting the warrant. Management vowed to listen to the concerns, but two weeks later announced that Cook’s original return-to-work decision would stand.
