We are gradually learning more about Apple's plans to abandon iTunes on Mac to adopt new, independent music, podcasts and TV applications. This afternoon, Apple released a comprehensive support document detailing what happens to iTunes when MacOS Catalina is released this fall.

Apple explains in the support document that "all your favorite iTunes features" will be available in the trio of new applications included in macOS Catalina. The company offers a bulleted list of where the most popular iTunes features are moving:
- The music you have imported or purchased will be in the new Apple Music app.
- The iTunes Store will still be available to buy music on Mac, iOS, PC and Apple TV.
- Backup, restore and sync on iPhone, iPad and iPod are transferred to the Finder.
- Movies and TV shows purchased or rented on iTunes will be included in the new Apple TV app.
- Use the Apple TV App for Mac for future purchases or rentals of movies and TV programs.
- Podcasts you've subscribed to or added to iTunes will now be in the new Apple Podcasts app.
- The audiobooks you purchased from iTunes will now be in the updated Apple Books application.
- Use Apple Books for Mac for future audio book purchases.
- ITunes gift cards and iTunes credits will be retained and can be used with new apps and the App Store.
Apple also reiterates that user libraries will automatically switch to their respective applications. "Your entire media collection will automatically find a new home and make the transition," says Apple.
When it comes to buying music through the iTunes Store, Apple notes again that the iTunes Store will be available in the same form as today, in the sidebar of the Music app. He also reaffirms that the synchronization of devices will pass to the Finder:
All the ways you manage devices in iTunes will soon appear in the Finder on Mac. Your sync settings and your previous backups in iTunes will be kept safe on your Mac after updating to macOS Catalina. Now that devices appear in the Finder, it's also easier to drag and drop the files you want to transfer to the same place.
