Apple has slipped to 4th place in the world ranking of smartphones after being overtaken by Xiaomi, the Chinese upstart.
The iPhone maker, which had only recently trailed Samsung and Huawei in the global market, fell into the top three, according to sales estimates from research firm Gartner.
Apple’s sales of 40.6 million iPhones in the quarter ending in September – before the release of the new iPhone 12 line – accounted for just over 11% of the overall smartphone market.
Xiaomi, meanwhile, saw its sales jump 35% in the quarter, taking a 12% share of the market with its 44.4 million devices sold.
Samsung has kept a firm grip on its top spot, nearly doubling Apple’s sales with 80.8 million smartphones sold. Although growth slowed by more than 20% from last year, Huawei retained its second place.
The new figures showed a reduced appetite for new phones during the pandemic, with sales down 5.7% from the same point last year. But Gartner senior research director Anshul Gupta said some recovery could be on the horizon.
“Consumers are limiting their discretionary spending even as some foreclosure conditions have started to improve,” Gupta said. “Global smartphone sales experienced moderate growth from the second quarter of 2020 to the third quarter. This was due to pent-up demand in previous quarters. “
Apple shares rose 2.3% on Tuesday morning to $ 121.82.
