Starship Capital Managing Partner John Meyer and Neuberger Berman Senior Research Analyst Dan Flax reflect on day one of Apple’s annual Global Developer Conference.
Tech giant Apple has fallen to third in the global smartphone market as the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in increased demand for the devices, according to preliminary data from research firm Canalys.
Samsung made 19% of smartphones shipped globally in the second quarter of 2021, according to the company’s quarterly estimates. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi came in second for the first time, with a 17% market share. Apple came in third with a 14% share.
“Xiaomi is rapidly expanding its business overseas,” Ben Stanton, Canalys research director, said in a statement. “For example, its shipments have increased by over 300% to Latin America, 150% to Africa and 50% to Western Europe.
Smartphone prices have probably played a major role in Xiaomi’s unit sales growth. The company’s phones have an average selling price that is 75% cheaper than Apple iPhones and 40% cheaper than Samsung smartphones, according to Canalys.

Apple smartphone shipments were up 1% from the same quarter a year earlier. Xiaomi’s shipments increased 83% over the same period, while Samsung’s increased by 15%.

“All suppliers are fighting hard to secure component supplies amid a global shortage, but Xiaomi is already aiming for the next price: replacing Samsung to become the world’s largest supplier,” added Stanton.
Overall, global smartphone shipments increased 12% in the second quarter. Chinese smartphone makers Oppo and Vivo ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
