After exploring the first beta version of macOS 10.15 Catalina, one thing became perfectly clear: Dashboard is officially eliminated in favor of Notification Center.
An icon for Dashboard, recovery from a previous Mac setup, is not accessible in the first beta version of MacOS Catalina from Apple.
Dashboard was first introduced in OS X 10.4 Tiger and served as a hub for widgets, such as weather, calculator, timer and third-party software.
However, as user interest decreased, Dashboard was disabled by default on OS X 10.10 Yosemite and had to be replaced by Notification Center. It continues to be disabled in macOS 10.14 Mojave, forcing users to manually activate the feature if they wish to use it.
In macOS Catalina, Dashboard is totally absent. It can not be activated via Mission Control and the code for this feature appears to have been removed from the beta versions of the operating system released to developers on Monday. In Launchpad, the Dashboard icon is literally a big question mark, similar to iTunes, which will soon be replaced by Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and standalone Apple TV apps.
Appleosophie attempted to use Terminal to force Dashboard to disable itself and activate it. As a general rule, this action would bring back an inactive dashboard, but this is not the case. The dashboard was still missing, no matter the forced reboot.
As the dashboard is not long for this world, users who rely on the hub for small applets will need to become familiar with the Mac Notification Center. The Today feature view assimilates most of the features of Dashboard, including the ability to install third-party widgets.
