We’ve been sharing our feelings about the design of Apple’s current Mac lineup over the past few months. Almost all of the new 2020 releases sported a familiar (read: old) design, arguably the worst offender being the 2020 iMac. Last year’s machine looks identical to every iMac released since 2012. But if we look at that. According to new leaks, the iMac 2021 is finally about to turn the tide.
According to Bloomberg, the first iMac makeover in nearly a decade will not only involve shrinking the screen’s gargantuan bezels, but it will also see the machine’s curved back flattened to allow for a much slimmer profile. It might still be our best computer for graphic design, but anything that makes the iMac look like it belongs here in the 2020s can only be a good thing.
New story: Apple is planning the first iMac redesign in nearly a decade with a new look reminiscent of Pro Display XDR. Also coming up: Intel Mac Pro refresh, a new half-size Apple Silicon Mac Pro (a modern PowerMac G4 Cube), and a cheaper standalone monitor. https://t.co/pLtNm6D34wJanuary 15, 2021
Bloomberg reports that the new iMac, slated for release in 2021, will feature a design reminiscent of Apple’s sleek (but ridiculously expensive) Pro Display XDR (below), which features tiny bezels and an ultra-thin body . Indeed, next to the Pro Display of 2019, the iMac 2020 can only be described by using one of the internet’s favorite words: chonky.
And the good news for iMac fans doesn’t end there. Along with an all-new design, the iMac 2021 would feature Apple’s all-new and incredible M1 chip, which is currently only available in the new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Mini. Released in November, the new chip is a game-changer for creatives – and we’re surprised to see that the MacBook M1s have already received an unexpected price cut.
When Apple revealed the ‘all-new’ iMac 2020 last summer, we couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed with the familiar design – especially with incredible fan-made renderings such as this iMac. inspired by the iPad Pro doing the trick online. But with an M1 chip and a new contemporary look, it looks like 2021 could breathe new life into the iMac and confirm its role as the desktop to beat for creatives. And with the MacBook Pro also in line for a design refresh, it looks like an exciting year for Apple fans.
