Tom Hanks is expected to return to Apple TV Plus in Bullfinch, a feature film set to debut about a robotics engineer surviving a post-apocalyptic new world with his four-legged companion Goodyear (and a robot).

The heart of BullfinchHanks ‘story centers on Hanks’ determination to find a guardian for Goodyear after his death. The sci-fi drama is set after a solar flare that devastated life on earth. Finch, the engineer, has for a decade survived a post-apocalyptic wasteland in an underground bunker, where he lives with his dog Goodyear – a very good boy and Finch’s only companion after the catastrophic event.

In this underground workspace, Finch develops a robot, Jeff, with whom they will embark on a treacherous journey to defeat a deadly storm and find safety. Along the way, they will face extreme weather events, merciless heat, UV rays, and other unexpected challenges.

The film arrives as Apple looks to increase its roster of original films. that of Martin Scorsese Moon Flower Killers, award-winning drama Coda, Mahershala Ali with Swan song, and joints A24 Macbeth’s tragedy and Sharper are just a handful of titles set to debut on the service soon.

Apple focused on developing award-winning titles rather than producing content on a budget, and Bullfinch is the second feature film starring Tom Hanks to debut on the service after its acquisition Doggy style from Sony last year. But to date, Apple’s original films haven’t had the full cultural impact its critical darling enjoys. Ted lasso, which garnered a record number of Emmy nominations this year for a first-season comedy and ultimately including its Creative Arts Emmy wins, took home seven awards. Of its 35 total Emmy nominations this year, Apple on Sunday won 11 Emmy total out of five titles.

Doggy style has been nominated for a host of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Sound. Corn Bullfinch will have much broader appeal than a World War II drama. Apple has proven that it can win over a warm and fuzzy mass appeal. May be Bullfinch will finally help Apple TV Plus to win the awards for the feature film it is fighting for.

Bullfinch airs Friday, November 5 on Apple TV Plus.
