Apple has been fined 10 million euros (US $ 12 million) for inaccurate claims about the waterproofness of its iPhones by the Italian competition regulator, Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM ). The fine, announced today, comes shortly after Apple paid a fine of US $ 113 million to settle its state-side “battery” investigation.
The AGCM said Apple has misled consumers in two ways. First, in promotional material and on its site, Apple claims that models from iPhone 8 to iPhone 11 are water resistant between one and four meters deep for 30 minutes. However, the regulator says these claims were made under laboratory conditions using plain, still water and did not hold up under real conditions.
Second, Apple’s warranty terms also voided coverage for water damaged phones, and the company did not repair water damaged phones.
But lawsuits over water resistance, batteries, and the Error 53 bug earlier this year have not deterred a greedy separation from what Apple may have planned for its next iPhone. New leaks suggest that Apple’s iPhone 13 could mark its first portless offering.
