Apple has just acquired another startup, Spaces, which has a team specializing in virtual reality (VR) technologies. The acquisition was announced today by a Protocol report citing own sources.
Spaces was created in 2016 by veterans of DreamWorks Animation, and the startup has since been developing virtual reality products, including a Zoom add-on that allowed users to host virtual reality video conferences using animated avatars.
The company halted all services last week without further details. The official Spaces website simply mentions that the startup is “now heading in a new direction.”

According to the protocol report, Apple and Spaces did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the acquisition. The price Apple paid when starting Spaces is also unknown.
While it’s uncertain whether the team behind Spaces will join a VR-related project at Apple, rumors suggest Apple is working on AR and VR headsets for 2021 and 2022. Bloomberg says the headset will feature high-resolution displays and a “cinematic speaker system,” which should prevent the user from noticing the differences between real life and the virtual reality experiences the headset will offer.
