Apple has not only improved the processors within its existing MacBook Pro models, but apparently the company has also improved the keyboards offered by these updated laptops, learned the iFixit demolition site.
The new MacBook Pro has a high price, like all MacBook Pro models. And, with a high price, a high quality expectation is expected. But, for several years, Apple MacBooks have keyboard problems due to missed or repeated support. They are the result of Butterfly keyboards used in MacBooks, from the 12-inch version to the MacBook Pro.
In the past, Apple has worked to solve this problem by making iterative changes to the keyboards, but the problems have persisted. Apple has even apologized for the keyboard failures that many have experienced, and has gone so far as to expand its keyboard repair program to cover all MacBooks with Butterfly keyboards recently.
This cover includes the latest MacBook Pro models, but some apparent changes to the Butterfly keyboards may help to avoid the need.
What is different?
According to the results of iFixit, there is at least one modification made to the Butterfly keyboard. The previous version, which was a problem, used a different material in its switch covers. These are intended to keep debris away from the key switch that records the inputs.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the new switch cover was nylon, while the old lid appeared to be primarily polyacetylene with aromatic urethane side groups. In addition, Apple may have changed the metal dome switch, but this has not been confirmed.
The changes are likely to address the issues that have affected previous Butterfly keyboards. But, as Apple has already tried to solve problems in the past, we will have to wait and see if the latest revision of the Butterfly keyboard will work.
