The MacBook Air, last updated in 2018, is Apple's most affordable laptop, priced at $ 1,199 for the latest hardware. Microsoft is also manufacturing a similar machine, the Surface Laptop 2, which came out at about the same time that Apple released its 2018 release Macbook Air update.

Both Macbook Air and the Surface Laptop 2 are thin and light machines, each weighing approximately 2.75 pounds. The Surface Laptop 2 has a 13.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2256 x 1504, while the Macbook Air has a 13.3-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600, so overall, from a design point of view, these two machines are quite similar, although the Laptop Surface 2 offers a 3: 2 screen.

The Surface Laptop 2 comes in a matte black color (it is also bordeaux and blue) because it is a nice deviation from the standard gold, silver, and space gray shades that Apple uses for his laptops. Inside of Macbook Air is entirely made of aluminum, but the Surface Laptop 2 uses an Alcantara fabric design, which has become an essential feature of the Surface range.

With regard to the touch sensation, the Macbook Air wins, although those who are not fans of the design of the butterfly key might not agree. the Macbook Air also has a better touchpad, which is not surprising, since most computers can not offer the same feel as the Force Touch touchpad with its haptic feedback.

Both laptops have a questionable port situation, with the Macbook Air limited to two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports and to the Surface 2 laptop with a USB-A port, an exclusive charging port and, inexplicably, a Mini DisplayPort , a strange choice for a modern laptop. It does not have USB-C ports, which is disappointing since the USB-C is the standard device to which accessory manufacturers are turning.

the Macbook Air uses Touch ID instead of a password to speed up the connection, while Surface Laptop 2 uses Windows Hello for facial recognition. Future Macs Could Adopt A Face ID, But For The Moment Touch ID is just as useful. Each of these laptops is equipped with a 720p webcam, which are both terrible, and although both have a decent sound, the Macbook AirThe speakers are sharper and lighter at maximum volume.

Each of these machines has similar internal specifications, and both are designed for simple tasks rather than for intensive video editing or 3D work. You can make slight changes or use Photoshop on these machines, but this is not their primary purpose.

With these thin, lightweight notebooks with low-power processors, the battery life is impressive. Both Macbook Air and the Surface Laptop 2 offer 10 to 12 hours of battery life for everyday tasks, such as using email and browsing the web.

Price is the main differentiator between the Surface Laptop 2 and the Macbook Air, and could push some to choose the Surface Laptop 2 instead of Macbook Air.

The basic Surface Laptop 2 model features a 8-generation 8th generation dual-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, all for $ 999. Macbook Air, offering similar specifications with less storage – a 1.6GHz 8th generation Dual Core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD – is available from € 1,199.

The Laptop Surface 2 and the Macbook Air are similar enough that choosing one over the other ultimately comes down to the preference of the ecosystem and the operating system. Microsoft machines of course run on Windows, which an Apple product user might not prefer, while Windows users will not want a machine running macOS.
