Apple Maps is finally starting to follow Google’s lead on user reviews

Since the release of, Apple Maps has included a built-in rating system that allows you to rate certain businesses, restaurants, and other points of interest. Prior to Monday, this feature was only available in countries like Australia and Japan, but like points out, you can now access it in the United States and Canada.

The feature works for most locations. It uses a simple thumb up or down system. When you tap on any of the icons, a secondary interface will appear, inviting you to share what you think about certain aspects of that business or restaurant. For example, in the latter case, you can also rate the food, customer service, and ambience. This same pane also allows you to upload your own photo in an ad.

An Apple spokesperson said Maps will offer you to add contributions based on your device history, in addition to the photos you have in your camera roll. Your name won’t appear next to any notes you leave, and any recommendations you receive that suggest you add to a list will come from the analysis Maps performs on the device.

At this time, you can’t leave a written review, which means there’s still a place for existing Maps integrations with services like Yelp and Tripadvisor. Apple could lay the groundwork for a more robust review system to match what Google Maps offers, but that will have to happen at a later date.
